To the Editor: An article in the August 1996 issue of Neurology entitled "Assessment: Neuropsychological testing of adults. Considerations for neurologists," recognizes the general value of neuropsychological testing but also presents inaccurate information about clinical neuropsychology. The authors of the article indicate that the Halstead-Reitan Battery (HRB) was never intended to be used for "differential diagnosis of neurologic disorders or precise delineation of the underlying neural systems." However, in the literature by Reitan (1959, 1964), the HRB was the first neuropsychological approach to demonstrate neuropsychological differences among different brain diseases or injuries.
